Overcoming Fear In A Time Of Crisis – Pt 01 – We Must Deal With Our Fear – David Hibbert.

  1. The Current Situation

What an unsettling time we are living in! I’ve heard of pandemics in the past, but I have never lived through one.

The Bible talks about plagues in the last days, and even secular society believes that one day, we are going to face the “big one”. Perhaps that’s why we are seeing so much fear right now – people are asking “could this be it – could this be the big one?”

Well, I don’t believe that this is the big one. But this pandemic has certainly disrupted our society. For the first time in the history of man, schools around the world have closed. In fact, most places for public gatherings have closed. Most restaurants have closed, many businesses have closed, cities are being locked down, countries are closing their borders, and people are being asked to keep their distance from each other.

But, because of the uncertain outcome of this pandemic, concern is becoming anxiety, anxiety is becoming fear, and fear is becoming panic. As a result, social distancing is becoming social isolation, and social isolation is becoming social quarantine. And anyone that doesn’t copy other people’s fear responses, is being criticized as being irresponsible and arrogant.

  1. God Will Work It For The Good

And even though this pandemic is going to cause a lot of tragedy, I believe that God is going to use it for the good.

Romans 8:28, NIV – (28) And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

So how is God going to work it for the good?

a) New Mass Salvations

First, I believe that God is going to use it to confront the mortality of mankind in a very stark way, that is going to cause millions of people to turn to God. And hopefully the church will be ready to share the gospel with them and welcome them into their church families.

b) New Prayer Movements

Second, I believe that the church is going to be confronted with our own pride, arrogance, waywardness, and lukewarmness, and respond again to God’s invitation in 2 Chronicles 7:14.

2 Chronicles 7:14, NIV – (14) If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Already, I am hearing heads of countries call for a national day of prayer and fasting,

And new prayer calls seem to be going out almost every day.

I believe that this pandemic is going to start a new, world-wide prayer movement. That will result in the glory of God being manifest in the world, and the character of Christ being reflected in the lives of believers.

c) New Micro-Church Movements

And third, I believe that the church will be confronted with their error of forming the church mainly around the large group meeting. So that most churches were completely unprepared for this pandemic.

I believe that by the end of this pandemic, we are going to see a major micro-church moment, where millions of small groups and house churches are going to be planted around the world, so that we can be much better able to weather the storm of a crisis, and much better able to disciple people.

  1. We Must Deal With Fear

The second week of March (just one week ago), the World Health Organization officially declared the corona virus as a global pandemic, and most countries have now declared a national emergency. And the news just keeps getting more frightening. As of noon, March 19 (today), there were over 230,000 recorded coronavirus cases, and over 9,000 people had died. [1] And some organizations are now predicting a 70 % infection rate.

Our modern world has never experienced a crisis of this magnitude. And unfortunately, every media report just adds fuel to the fear, until it has become almost a wildfire of fear.

And there are signs of panic everywhere. Panic buying at stores, and panic living behind closed doors.

Now, I understand all the reasons that we feel anxious. But we must not allow this anxiety to grip us with fear, as fear paralyses our body, soul and spirit. And weakens our immune system, one of the things we need to be strong right now.

But we also need our faith to be strong right now, as Biblical faith has always been a divine protection in a time of crisis.

So I want to share with you some Biblical truths that are designed to calm your worries, reduce your anxieties, and relieve your fears.

I want to share with you some truths, about how to overcome fear during a time of crisis. And we’ll begin to do that, starting with our next video. But for now, why don’t you read through Psalm 23 a number of times, pray it out loud, and meditate on it. And then I’ll share with you again tomorrow.
