Overcoming Fear In A Time Of Crisis – Pt 06 – Focus On What Is Unchanging – David Hibbert.
- Focus On What Is Unchanging
So, we’re talking about how to overcome fear in a time of crisis. And as I said, What we KNOW is what gets us THROUGH. And so today I want to give us a fourth reminder, that will cause us to have confidence and courage and calmness.
And the fourth thing I want to remind us of, is that we should FOCUS ON WHAT IS UNCHANGING.
Remember my last verse from yesterday’s message:
2 Corinthians 4:17-18, NIV – (17) For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. (18) So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
During this time of crisis, we need to remember to focus on what is unchanging. In the days ahead, we need to focus our life, not on what is changing, but on what is unchanging.
- The World Is Changing
We know there are going to be a lot of changes in the days ahead. Remember all the changes that happened after Hurricane Katrina. Remember all the changes that happen after 9-11.
I can promise you, that as a result of what is happening right now, there will be changes in the world and in every country, wherever we are. Many of our social habits, that we should have been doing for the last 30 years, we are beginning to do now. Things are changing.
And during a time of change, the key to stability, is to focus on unchangeable truth,
when everything around us is up in the air. We need to focus on what never changes in the days ahead, because that will give us stability.
If we are swimming, and for whatever reason we start to drown, how do we keep from drowning? We don’t focus on our crisis, and on flailing in the water around us – we focus on the shore, that is not moving, and we do our best to swim to the shore. We FIX our eyes on what is unmovable and unchanging.
In the same, in this time of crisis, we don’t flail our lives around in panic, and focus on what is changing, because we don’t know where it will end up. Instead, we focus on what is unchanging.
- Unchangeable Truths To Focus On
So what unchangeable truths should we focus on?
1) “God sees everything we are going through.”
We need to focus on that.
2) “God cares about everything we are going through.”
That is also unchangeable. God sees … and God cares.
3) “God has the power to change what we are going through.”
Because God sees and cares, He has the power to answer our prayers. That is unchangeable.
4) “God always acts out of His goodness to us.”
That is never going to change. No matter what happens, God is always going to act out of His goodness to us.
5) “God’s plan is always better than our plan.”
We may not see it, but God’s plan is always better because God is all wise, and all knowing, and He is a good God.
6) “God will never stop loving us.”
God loved use before we were even born. He will still love us a thousand years from now. God will never stop loving us, and that is never going to change in our lives.
7) “We cannot lose our salvation because of a crisis.”
Once we have put our trust in Christ, no crisis is going to keep us from our security in Christ.
Romans 8:38-39, NIV – (38) For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, (39) neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
2 Timothy 1:12, NIV – (12) … I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.”
These are things we need to focus on, the things that never change … God’s care for us … God’s power for us … God’s grace for us … God’s goodness for us … God’s plan for us … God’s love for us … God’s salvation for us.
And tomorrow I’ve gone one more thing that will never change. I hope you will come back tomorrow.
