Answers 11 – How Do I Receive By Faith? – David Hibbert.
Introduction
In this series called “Answers”, my goal is to help you, by sharing with you short, Biblical answers to questions that people have been asking me. Today’s question:
How do I receive by faith?
In the book of Hebrews chapter 11, we read that great heroes of the faith all received by faith.
Abraham and Sarah received a miraculous childbirth.
Hebrews 11:11, NIV – (11) By faith Abraham, even though he was past age — and Sarah herself was barren — was enabled to become a father because he considered him faithful who had made the promise.
Abraham received a great spiritual inheritance.
Hebrews 11:8, NIV – (8) By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.
Rabab received a deliverance from danger.
Hebrews 11:31, NKJV – (31) By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.
But how, specifically, do we receive by faith?
- The Three Steps To Receiving By Faith.
Basically, there are three steps to receiving by faith. First, know the truth. Second, agree with the truth. Third, respond to the truth.
a) Know The Truth.
John 8:32, NIV – (32) “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
If we are going to receive by faith, we must first know the truth – what God’s will is, concerning a specific situation.
b) Agree With The Truth.
Proverbs 23:23, NIV – (23) Buy the truth and do not sell it.
That word “buy” (Strong’s H7069 = קָנָה [qânâh]) means “to create, to procure, to own, to attain”.
So how do we buy the truth – we “own” it – we come into complete agreement with it. We create, procure, own and attain God’s will by coming into agreement with it. We agree that God’s word on a specific matter is truth, and we agree that it is God’s will for us to have it.
c) Respond To The Truth.
Acts 2:38, NIV – (38) Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Peter said that if the people wanted to be forgiven and receive the Holy Spirit, they had to respond to the truth by repenting and being baptized.
Acts 3:6, NIV – (6) Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”
Peter told the crippled man that if he wanted to be healed, he had to respond to the truth by attempting to stand up and walk.
Summary.
So how do we receive by faith?
All the way through the Bible, whenever someone received something by faith, they first had to know the truth, agree with the truth, and then respond to the truth by taking a step of faith.
