Answers 16 – Is There More Than One Type Of Curse In The Bible? – Pt 2.
Introduction
In this series called “Answers”, my goal is to help you, by sharing with you short, Biblical answers to questions that people have been asking me. Today’s question: Is There More Than One Type Of Curse In The Bible?
We have already looked at three different types of curses – The Curse of the Law, Spiritual Consequence Curses, and Word Curses. In this lesson, I want to look at 2 more.
- Self Curses
The fourth type of curse found in the Bible, I call “Self Curses”. It is related to word curses, but instead of putting a curse on someone else, the person puts a curse on themselves.
When Peter denied Jesus 3 times, he was so upset with himself, that he started to call down curses on himself.
Mark 14:71, NIV – (71) He began to call down curses on himself, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”
If Jesus had not forgiven Peter for his betrayal, you can be sure that Peter would have suffered the consequences of his self-curses.
The best example of a self-curse is found in the Gospel of Matthew.
Matthew 27:24-25, NIV – (24) When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!” (25) All the people answered, “Let his blood be on us and on our children!”
Jesus was an innocent man – even Pilate the Roman governor of Judea realized that. So he did not want to sentence Jesus to death, because he realized that if he did, he would have shed innocent blood, and Jesus’ blood would therefore be on his hands.
However, at that moment, the Jewish people declared, “Let his blood be on us and on our children”. In essence, they were putting a curse on themselves.
And what was the result? For the last 2000 years, no race of people has been more oppressed, and more attacked, and more slaughtered than the Jewish people.
Remember that a word curse, even a self-curse, is like a demonic assignment, and there is only one way to deal with demonic assignments, including self-curses. We must confess our self-curse, repent of it, renounce it, and cancel it.
- Generational Curses (Due To Spiritual Consequence Curses).
The fifth type of curse, I call a “Generational Curse”. A generational curse is a curse that is passed down from parents to their children, and their children’s children, even for generations, until the curse is renounced, and cancelled.
First, let’s look at generational curses that are due to Spiritual Consequence Curses, that I talked about in our last episode.
Numbers 14:18, NKJV – (18) The LORD is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.
So, if your parent or parents broke a command of God, and they did not repent of their sins, and accept the sacrifice of Jesus for their sins, they will experience that Spiritual Consequence Curse that we talked about in the last lesson.
Now, if YOU do not accept the sacrifice of Jesus for your sins, the consequence of your parent’s sin – the Spiritual Consequence Curse – will be passed from them to you, and even to your children if they do not accept the sacrifice of Jesus.
However, as soon as your parents repent, the curse is cancelled in their generation.
If your parents do NOT repent and accept the sacrifice of Jesus, but you accept the sacrifice of Jesus, and your repent of your sins AND the unrepented sins of your parents, then the curse is cancelled in YOUR generation.
Leviticus 26:40-42, NIV – (40) “‘But if they will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors — their unfaithfulness and their hostility toward me, … (42) … I will remember my covenant …
However, if you do NOT repent and accept the sacrifice of Jesus, but your children accept the sacrifice of Jesus, and repent on behalf of their sins and your sins, then the curse is cancelled in THEIR generation.
This is what happens for all generational curses that are due to Spiritual Consequence sins.
- Generational Curses (Due To Self-Curses).
Now, what about generational curses that are due to self-curses?
Let’s go back to the passage in the Gospel of Matthew.
Matthew 27:24-26, NIV – (24) When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!” (25) All the people answered, “Let his blood be on us and on our children!”
At that moment, when the Jewish people declared, “Let his blood be on us and on our children”. They were putting a word-curse on themselves. And as I said, a word-curse is like a demonic assignment, that will always be fulfilled, unless it is cancelled.
Because of people of Israel did not repent for putting a curse on themselves, and because they even put this curse on their children, when they declared “Let his blood be on us and on our children”, this word-curse became a generational curse, that has been passed down for almost 2000 years. And no race of people has been more oppressed, and more attacked, and more slaughtered, and suffered more, than the Jewish people.
What can we do with a generational curse, due to a self-curse?
First, we must discover it. Second, we must accept Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins, and give our lives to Him. Third, we must use our new Spiritual authority in Christ, and renounce this word-curse on behalf of our family, and fourth, we must use our new Spiritual authority in Christ, to cancel it so that it does not continue to flow down through our family generations.
Summary.
There seem to be at least 6 types of curses found in the Bible.
The Curse Of The Law, that Jesus dealt with on the cross.
And there are five other curses, that we must deal with by accepting the sacrifice of Jesus for our sins, and then use our own spiritual authority.
Spiritual Consequence Curses, that we deal with by doing our best to live in obedience to Christ.
Word Curses, that we deal with by making sure that there is no opening in our lives due to willfull disobedience.
Self-Curses, that we deal with by repenting of, renouncing, and cancelling the curse.
Generational Curses Due To Spiritual Consequences, that we deal with accepting the sacrifice of Jesus for our sins, and repenting of our sins and the sins of our parents.
And Generational Curses Due To Self-Curses, that we deal with by identifying them, renouncing them, repenting of them, and using our spiritual authority to cancel them.
Now, how do we avoid having to live with curses of any type?
First, give your life to Jesus Christ, right now, and accept His payment for your sins. Second, do your best to live in obedience to His will for your life. Third, deal, quickly, with any and all willful disobedience. Fourth, refuse to ever declare a curse, whether over another person, or over yourself, and fifth, identity all generation curses, repent of your parent’s involvement in them, repent of your involvement in them, renounce them, and use your spiritual authority, as soon as possible, to cancel them.
The good news is, you CAN be free of every curse, if you accept the sacrifice of Jesus for your sins, you give your life over to His leadership, and you use your spiritual authority to live for Him, and cancel every curse.
