Four Foundations Of Leadership – Foundation # 3 – Team Building – Brian Sauder
Build with vision.
God has a vision for His people. Vision always precedes reality. Vision is a gift God places in the church to inspire people to see something they would not otherwise see and believe something they would not otherwise believe. Every leader should lead with vision. Keep a bigger vision for God’s kingdom, but stay focused on your vision. Don’t stray from what the Lord has told you to do, but keep an open heart.
Build in holiness.
Set a biblical standard, teach it clearly, announce your expectations, then hold people to it. Focus on the nature and holiness of God.
Build a team with a variety of gifts.
Include a diversity of personalities. Encourage diversity. A diverse team reflects the character of God. Unity but not uniformity.
Build through inclusiveness.
Include varieties of theology. Encourage different cultures and races. Be inclusive in how you make your decisions. The first step in clear communication is listening and respecting what you hear and taking it seriously.
Build by following.
Ephesians 5:21. Build team unity by being under authority. If you can’t come under authority, you can’t be in authority. The more mature you become, the more people you come under. Authority doesn’t mean anything until you have to give something up. Authority is the reflection of maturity, character, experiences, gifting.
Build team unity joyfully
Build Joyfully. God made us with the capacity to laugh. Celebrate the seasons, the good memories in out lives. The spirit of celebration is part of how God created us to mark those things that are special in our lives. The people of Israel had seven times of celebration. Life should be celebrated. Enjoy your team.
Build with Discernment.
We are fighting against powers of darkness. Discern the tactics of the enemy that are specifically aimed at your team. 2 Corinthians 10:4. We must saturate our minds with the truths of God’s Word in order to discern what is of God and what is not. Don’t open the door to everyone who comes along; get to know them first.
Build as learners.
Ask questions. Identify your own (biblical) presuppositions and test other ideas by your presuppositions and your ministry philosophy. The primary way to lead people is to ask questions. Be learners from others in their spiritual walk. Never stop learning. Go on retreats, take days off to give you time to rest, reflect and pray.
Build through righteous speech.
Communication skills. Speak consistently and clearly and stick with what God says. Speak lovingly; inspire people; encourage people. Get the people together who are having conflict. Help them to work it through. Develop skills to manage conflict. Set a tone on your team by only talking about what edifies other people.
Communicate it in writing. Habukkuk 2:1-3, NIV – “I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint. Then the LORD replied: “Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.”
“If you listen to the whispers, you’ll never have to deal with the screams.”
Build with good planning.
Good Planning. Nehemiah gave clear job descriptions as they built the wall. Develop your planning and administration skills. Good management builds team unity. Communicate clearly with people when they are not doing their job.
Team leader sets the vision, team members refine and define.
