Good News For Today 23 – Charles Spurgeon – For Man’s Need.[i]

Here’s how evangelist Charles Spurgeon explained the gospel – the good news of Jesus Christ.
A Christian worker once visited a poor woman, in order to bring her some money which she badly desperately. He knocked at her door once, and then he knocked again, but he got no response. Eventually he had to go away disappointed, with the money still in his pocket, even though he sincerely wanted to help the woman.
He happened to see the woman a few days later in the village, and he told her about his futile visit. She replied, with tears in her eyes, that she had heard him knocking, but thought that he was the rent collector, and was afraid to open the door, because she didn’t have the money to pay the rent.
Charles Spurgeon said that this is how many people respond when they hear the gospel. We all have a need, and most of us know that we have a need, but we do not understand who is knocking at the door of our lives.
The One Who stands at the door of our heart and knocks has come with a gift, and the knock is the Savior’s knock, not the knock of a taskmaster.
The Gospel is good news – news of a debt paid, NOT of rent required. It is NOT a demand for payment, but the free gift of a debt already paid, which no one has deserved, and which no one could ever earn by merit. Instead, it is a free gift – offered to all.
